Pagume 2, 2018 E.C. | Addis Ababa A delegation from the University of Michigan International Rehabilitation Forum, led by President Andrew Haig and Vice President M. Nelson, visited the Ethiopian Prosthetic and Orthotic Service (EPOS) with the aim of strengthening ongoing collaboration in the field of rehabilitation medicine. During the visit, Dr. Tariku Tadesse, Chief Executive Officer of EPOS, briefed the delegation on the institution’s current activities, service delivery capacity, capacity-building needs, and the major challenges facing the rehabilitation sector. Dr. Tariku also highlighted the importance of strengthening the use of technology and enhancing human resource capacity in prosthetics and orthotics, assistive technology, physiotherapy, and mental health and addiction rehabilitation services. He further emphasized the need to develop joint programs and initiatives to advance rehabilitation services. This was followed by an extensive and constructive discussion with the Forum’s leadership on potential areas of future collaboration. For their part, Andrew Haig, President of the International Rehabilitation Forum, and M. Nelson, Vice President, expressed their appreciation for EPOS’s overall activities, the range of services it provides, and the progress the institution has made in advancing rehabilitation services. The Forum leaders noted that the visit provided an important opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the current realities and needs of EPOS, facilitate better planning of joint programs, and explore collaborative approaches to addressing challenges in the rehabilitation sector. The visit is expected to further strengthen collaboration between EPOS and the University of Michigan International Rehabilitation Forum by promoting knowledge sharing, technology transfer, and professional experience exchange, while creating additional opportunities to work together toward improved and more accessible rehabilitation services. The senior leadership of EPOS emphasized that the engagement represents an important step toward building stronger partnerships and enhancing the quality, capacity, and sustainability of rehabilitation services in Ethiopia.
