Human Resources Development Framework to Strengthen Rehabilitation Services Reviewed by Stakeholders August 5, 2018 E.C. | Addis Ababa The Human Resources Development Framework developed to strengthen rehabilitation and assistive technology services was reviewed through an extensive consultation with various stakeholders. The Ethiopian Prosthetic and Orthotic Service (EPOS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, organized a stakeholder consultation to review the Human Resources Development Framework prepared to strengthen rehabilitation and assistive technology services in Ethiopia. Delivering the opening remarks, Associate Professor Dr. Solomon Seyed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopian Prosthetic and Orthotic Service, noted that rapid technological and service advancements are being witnessed globally in the field of rehabilitation, particularly in assistive technology. He emphasized that although considerable attention is being given at the highest leadership level to improving access to rehabilitation services in Ethiopia, much more remains to be done in light of the country’s needs and the growing demand for rehabilitation services among the population. Dr. Solomon further underscored the critical importance of collaboration and active participation among stakeholders in addressing these gaps. He identified the development of competent rehabilitation professionals, expansion of training capacity, integration of modern technologies into rehabilitation services, and strengthening the continuing professional development of rehabilitation practitioners as key priorities. During the forum, recommendations were also presented to establish advanced training capacity in rehabilitation sciences, assistive technology, rehabilitation engineering, and comprehensive rehabilitation medicine, with the aim of ensuring accessible and quality rehabilitation services for the community. Participants noted that the recommendations provided during the consultation would serve as valuable inputs for further strengthening the content of the framework, clearly defining human resources development priorities, and aligning the document with Ethiopia’s actual rehabilitation workforce needs. The leadership of the Ethiopian Prosthetic and Orthotic Service, for its part, stated that the institution will ensure that the ideas and recommendations raised during the forum are appropriately incorporated into the final document. The institution also reaffirmed its commitment to building a strong human resources development system capable of advancing the rehabilitation and assistive technology sectors in Ethiopia. Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to contribute valuable inputs to the framework. They also affirmed their readiness to continue working in collaboration with the Ethiopian Prosthetic and Orthotic Service and to play their respective roles in advancing rehabilitation services and assistive technology in the country.
